1938 Medal Winner: Animals of the Bible, A Picture Book, illustrated by Dorothy P. Lathrop; text: selected by Helen Dean Fish (Lippincott) ( Link to the American Library Association page). The book was originally published in 1937 by the Frederick A. Stokes Company, which Lippincott acquired during the 1940s.
- Collecting?
- From what I have been able to extrapolate from seller descriptions online, look for FERDERICK A. STOKES COMPANY as the publisher, year 1937.
- GREEN cloth boards with black lettering
- My copy is a second print, which is noted on the copyright page. I assume that subsequent prints would be noted as well: November 12, 1937.
- First print date is listed as October 7, 1937
- Dust-jacket is exactly as it appears on my discussion post.
- Lippincott also published the book. My 11th printing has red boards with black lettering; I do not have a DJ and have not seen one associated with this edition.
- There also appears to be a first British edition, published by Hutchinson's Books for Young People in 1946. It has orange boards and a much different DJ: A green, orange, and black drawing of two children reading a book under a tree surrounded by blackbirds,

- Another Caldecott-lover's perspective:
- While I doubt that you need to seek out a first or second printing, the edition that you manage to find does matter for this book. I have two copies, one an early printing and also a Lippincott 14th impression. As you can see from the side-by-side comparison, some of the line details get lost and many of the pictures seem blotchy. In fact, it wasn't until I got the earlier copy that I really came to appreciate Lathrop's talent.
